instructor induction

Outdoor Education - Schools

Thornbridge Outdoors uses a range of high quality freelance instructors throughout the year. We offer many different programmes to many different groups, therefore we use staff with a range of qualifications and experience.

As a minimum we require instructors to hold a valid first aid qualification, and one of the following qualifications:

  • MLT Single Pitch Award (SPA)
  • MLT Walking Group Leader Award (WGL)
  • MLT Mountain Leader Award (ML)
  • BCA Local Cave and Mine Leader Award Level One
  • A nationally recognised mountain bike leader award

The ability to drive minibuses is an advantage, as are higher qualifications, and of course any qualifications held need to be supported by a range of experience working with a variety of groups in different settings.

All Thornbridge staff are also required to complete an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure

Applying to work at Thornbridge Outdoors:

Stage One:

Submit a CV to info@thornbridgeoutdoors.co.uk along with a covering letter/email. Details of suitable candidates are kept on record.

Stage Two:

When we need to add to our list of freelance instructors we run a half day Instructor Induction course, to which we invite selected suitably qualified and experienced applicants from those who have sent in their CV.

These courses are designed to give:

  • the opportunity to meet you.
  • potential new staff an opportunity to meet the centre staff, and see the centre.
  • an opportunity to induct staff onto some of our more popular activities, such as our onsite high ropes courses.
  • an opportunity to illustrate how the centre operates on a day to day basis including stores, equipment issue, maintenance, operating procedures etc.
  • a chance to discuss our emergency protocols

Potential staff should bring originals of all of their relevant qualifications with them to have them copied and verified, along with their most recent CRB disclosure and driving licence if applicable.

Stage Three:

Depending on what activities staff are able to deliver , further inductions may be required on our onsite high ropes courses or local activities.

Referees would be contacted.

Stage Four:

Assuming that the above process goes well and the potential staff member meets the standards required of Thornbridge Outdoors instructors then opportunities to work with our groups can be offered.
