Walking Group Leader Award (WGL) Training Assessment

Mountain Leader Award (ML) Training Assessment

Thornbridge Outdoors offers training and assessment in two nationally recognised hill and mountain walking leadership qualifications which are accredited by Mountain Leader Training England (MLTE) - the Walking Group Leader Award (WGL) and the Mountain Leader Award (ML).

The process for the WGL and ML schemes is as follows:

  1. Personal experience: The courses assume a basic level of hill and/or mountain walking which is detailed below. If you don't have enough personal experience you may want to consider our Skills courses.
  2. Registration: Before undertaking a training course you should register on the appropriate scheme with the training board of the country in which you live:
    Mountain Leader Training England (MLTE)
    Mountain Leader Training Wales (MLTW)
    Mountain Leader Training Scotland (MLTS)
Mountain Leader Training Northern Ireland (MLTNI)
You can book onto your training course before you have registered, but it is best to be registered before you attend the course itself.
  3. Training course: Attend a training course - details below.
  4. Consolidation period: You will learn a great deal on your training course and will need some time to practice and put your new knowledge into action. Your course trainers will advise you as to how long you may want to take to do this.
  5. Assessment course: When you feel that you are competent in all areas of the award syllabus and meet all of the award requirements, book onto an assessment course.
