Duke of Endinburgh Award - Colleges and Universities
With a 55-acre site in the heart of the Peak District, Thornbridge Outdoors can provide the perfect venue as a base for your Duke of Edinburgh group or for expedition training.
Located in the White Peak, the surrounding area is ideal for Bronze and Silver groups and a good base for Gold groups, from which they can walk into ‘wild country’ (Dark Peak) for practise / qualifying expeditions.
Duke of Edinburgh groups can book the campsite for toilets / showers only or the indoor camp block as well (which includes a large dining room and self catering kitchen). The indoor dining room is ideal for planning and teaching purposes during the evenings or in wet weather.
At Thornbridge Outdoors, you can deliver your own Duke of Edinburgh programmes or we can help, for example:
- Expeditions – We can deliver expedition training days / weekends to prepare young people for their expedition, advise on routes and equipment and assist with the remote supervision of groups whilst undertaking their expedition. Training can be based at Thornbridge or at another location if appropriate.
- First Aid – We are able to provide training for First Aid and emergency procedures for young people as part of the expedition training. We can also provide First Aid training courses for staff delivering the Duke of Edinburgh programme in your school.
- Residential – You can complete your Gold Residential at Thornbridge Outdoors by booking onto our popular ‘Green Action’ course. This is a 5-day residential which involves conservation activities (such as dry stone walling / working with willow / wood craft) as well as outdoor activities (such as rock climbing / caving / abseiling / high ropes / problem solving etc). Whilst completing the Green Action course, it is also possible to achieve the John Muir award.
