Thornbridge Outdoors: Bringing Outdoor Learning to Your School

Real adventures. Real outcomes. Real inclusion.

Thornbridge Outdoors is Sheffield City Council’s outdoor education centre, located in the heart of the Peak District.  While our centre offers unforgettable residential experiences, we also bring the magic of outdoor learning directly to your school through our Outreach Programme.

What Is Outreach?

Our outreach programme allows us to deliver high-quality outdoor learning at your school or a venue of your choice.  Whether you’re looking to enrich your curriculum, build team spirit, or develop key life skills, our experienced instructors can tailor sessions to meet your needs.

Activities include:

  • Team building and problem-solving tasks (indoor and outdoor)
  • Survival skills and fire-lighting
  • Orienteering and map reading
  • First aid training
  • School INSET days
  • Climbing wall tuition and training
  • OEAP Outdoor Learning Cards training for staff

Why Choose Thornbridge Outdoors?

We believe in the transformative power of outdoor experiences.  Our outreach programme is designed to:

  • Widen horizons through meaningful adventures
  • Build resilience and teamwork among pupils
  • Support curriculum goals with hands-on learning
  • Remove barriers to participation by providing inclusive equipment and flexible formats

Support for Teachers

We work closely with school staff to co-design sessions that align with your learning objectives.  Visiting staff are encouraged to take an active role, which strengthens the connection between outdoor experiences and classroom learning.

We also offer training for educators in:

Flexible Formats

Outreach can be delivered as:

  • Half-day or full-day sessions
  • Part of a themed week or enrichment programme
  • A precursor to a residential visit
  • A standalone experience for schools unable to travel

We work hard looking after our slice of the Peak District - both for now and for the future. Returning guests will notice that a number of trees have been felled but worry not - we've done so on expert advice and will replant with native trees soon. #woodlandmanagement #peakdistrict #nature
