Hill Skills in the Peak District
Learn the essentials of safe, enjoyable hill walking on this friendly, practical two‑day course based in and around Thornbridge Outdoors. Hill Skills is designed by Mountain Training to help you plan great days out, navigate confidently and look after yourself and others in typical UK hill and moorland terrain.
Who is this course for?
- New or returning walkers who’d like structured coaching before heading beyond familiar paths
- Adults and young people (age 10+) keen to build independence in the hills – no previous experience required
What You’ll Learn
Across two active days (mostly outdoors), your instructor will tailor the programme to the group and the weather while covering the Hill Skills syllabus, including:
- Planning: choosing suitable routes, using forecasts and timing your day
- What to take: efficient clothing and equipment choices
- Navigation: practical map and compass skills with simple strategies for finding your way
- Hazards & emergencies: recognising common risks and what to do if things go wrong
